THE TECHNIQUE

The late Simon Gate and Edward Hald, the famous
and respected glass artists, developed the very special
and very complicated Graal technique at the Orrefors
glassworks in 1917. The
inspiration was Gallée glass.

Graal - step by step
The first step in the Graal technique is
to blow a clear crystal bubble, and at the same time a coloured
one with one or more colours. The coloured bubble is turned inside
-out and then the cler bubble is attached to it. The technique
is called overlay. Now you have the
raw glass. When it cols the artist can paint the design directly
onto the piece. By cutting, engaving, sandblasting or etching,
the design is made in relief through the layers of different colours.
The process continues by re-heating the raw piece,
casing it several times with new crystal, then blowing
the right shape.
The signing
The technique is complicated and requires
a very
experienced master. Studio Åhus prefers to use Graal
technique for thick and heavy pieces. Studio Åhus signs
its Graaal pieces as follows: Studio Åhus sweden, the year,
Graal or Gold Graal, name and number of the design,
Hanne Dreutler-Arthur Zirnsack, and the mark below,
which means it is an eternal cross to the Graal. |
